Very Rare Hamilton 22 Jewel - US Govt. Issue - 1940 Pilot/Navigator Pocket Watch. This Very Rare - Hamilton 22 Jewel US Govt. Issue Pilot/Navigator Pocket Watch which has been Plexiglas Mounted for use on an aircraft plotting board, is in Excellent Working Condition.

It is a Hamilton Model 4992B, Serial # 4C101699, 22 Jewel and based on the serial # was made in 1944. The second hand, is so smooth that it appears to float around the dial. This item is about 3 7/8" Square and about 7/8" Thick. The owner has been told that this item is actually a navigators instrument which uses a Hamilton Pilot Pocket Watch Movement.

The face on this instrument is about five/six times larger than the normal Pilot Pocket Watch. These were used primarily, by navigators on the B-17 & B-24 Bombers.

It was used by aircraft navigators flying long distances and by astronomers in their repeated observation of a particular spot in the sky. Both uses were before the advent of computers and the GPS system. That particular watch work was installed in the Plexiglas holder for mounting on a plot board on the aircraft navigator's desk. It was found that navigators made far fewer mistakes while using the DMS system in plotting position to position of the aircraft. As always, questions are welcome.
