My next step would be to remove the gold filled watches from the lot and scrap the cases. OK, so the details of the lot... There a total of 60 watches.
30 are gold filled case watches. And 30 are not (silveroid mostly).
For testing, I simply wound them up and see if they ticked. Precisely half of them did (30 of the 60). I did not test for accuracy or long term running.
Just wound them up, perhaps tapped it against my palm, and if they started ticking and did so for 10 seconds, I put it down and moved onto the next one. Many of those that didn't run during this testing, I took a closer look and found nothing obviously wrong, and many ticked a bit when I put some pressure on the center wheel and gave the balance a push. Both some watches did have issues, like broken mainspring, staff, etc. I noted and counted the following makes.6 Illinois including a Washington Watch Co Army Navy 21J hunting case, which runs but is in bad shape otherwise (this one is the one toward the upper right with front cover broken off, bad dial, bad hands). 2 Hamilton including one in the box with a chain. 1 United States Watch Co Marion Asa Fuller with butterfly cutout, which is in a nice 5 oz coin silver case, but has at least a broken mainspring. 1 US Watch Co Betsy Ross.
4 Hampden including Railway, Lord Byron, and Fred Hull (private label I suppose). Note that the sum of the above is 59, one short of the total of 60.
My guess is that I miscounted the Elgin, Waltham or Illinois by one piece (one short). There is one Illinois 18 size in a Dueber Hampden display/salesman case, without crown or stem. There is one 18 size box hinge case Waltham in a gold colored case (tarnished) that is marked 18 in a shield inside the case, but I believe it's gold filled and not solid gold. That watch has an elk scene on it.
I did not notice any movement parts missing. That is, nothing like a missing balance or hairspring. I counted 10 watches are missing crystals. One has a loose crystal. A few have bad dials, missing or broken hands, etc.
