The Hamilton AN5740 was a master navigational (GCT) watch. GCT stands for Greenwich Civil Time, a term adopted by US astronomers after the measurement of Greenwich Mean Time was switched from a noon start to a midnight start. AN5740 refers to the specification that the watch had to meet in order to be accepted for service by the US authorities. The AN part of the spec means that the spec covered both US Army and US Navy requirements. This rare historical time piece is in overall good condition, but is not currently running.

There is a minor crack in the plastic crystal at the 19-hour mark, some minor scuffing, dings, and other blemishes around the edges, a little finish wear on the stem and loop, and the back has a wear spot all the way through the nickel finish in about the center and some prolific scratching. (Please see photos for exacting condition details). This watch is likewise NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING. It seems to be have been wound too much and the stem will adjust the hands, but not wind.

It will need to be serviced before it can be operational again. This Military GCT watch features the Hamilton model 5 22 jewel movement, is a size 16s, and had the standard Nickel finish. According to a Hamilton dating website, the movement was produced on or about 1944 and designated for military use. Overall this is a fine collector's piece. Bulky, larger, or heavier items may take more time.
