18 size Hamilton 23 jewel grade 946 EXTRA railroad pocket watch

  

Desireable 18 size Hamilton Watch Co. 23 jewel, lever setting, grade 946 marked "EXTRA" railroad pocket watch, in Dueber silverine (nickel alloy) swing ring case. Serial number 550,472 dates watch to 1908.

The Hamilton 23 jewel 18 size 946 and 947 movements that were marked "extra" were ordered by A. Anderson on Minneapolis circa 1900-10. Anderson was a Minneapolis watch dealer and railroad watch inspector whose business was located in an area of Minneapolis located near two railroad passenger depots and many nearby rail yards. The dial for these watches would have been originally marked A. Post 1910, when railroad watch standards became more stringent, private label dial would have been disallowed and only arabic dials with the factory name and hands that were blue/black would have been permitted. Presumably that is what happened with this watch and it was fitted with the correct arabic Hamilton dial and spade hands, as well as the sturdy dust proof swing ring case as seen here. Watch runs good and keeps time to within a minute or two a day. Movement looks clean with the usual light tool marks.
