Hamilton Burlington Route Special Grade 938 17j 18s Rare Railroad Pocket Watch

  

18 size 17 jewel open face lever-set Burlington Route Special Grade 938 pocket watch. A very rare railroad marked movement featuring a spectacular 2-tone gold and nickel checkboard and snowflake pattern damaskeen finish. Movement is signed Burlington Route. And also features a crescent moon engraving to its barrel bridge.

Watch is fronted by its correct double-sunk enamel dial signed Wilbur, Lanphear Co. Who were Galesburg, Illinois jewelers that contracted these movements from Hamilton. Dial is paired with an attractive set of time-zone hour hands. Watch is housed in a coin silver Fahys case with a spectacular gold inlaid train scene to its rear. Movement serial number is 13820. Running though winds somewhat stiffly and I think likely this movement hasn't seen a servicing in a number of years. Very nice looking movement with excellent 2-tone color. Balance jewel setting is a brass replacement. Dial faces up very nicely though with a few slight flaws - a faint hairline to the upper portion of its center section, a small flake to the upper rim of its center hole, a short fine scratch within the left side of the seconds-register, a very small scratch to the right side of its center section, and some slight unevenness to the seating of its seconds-register.

Case is very attractive but I believe its rear design has been re-engraved as it is in crisp condition while the remainder of the case shows a greater degree of normal wear.
