Hamilton 940 Very Rare 2-tone Checkerboard 21j 18s Railroad Pocket Watch

  

18 size 21 jewel open face lever-set Grade 940 pocket watch with very rare 2-tone checkerboard damaskeen pattern. Movement is very attractive with gold jewel settings, gold balance screws, gold flashed regulator assembly and movement screws, and with its 2-tone color remaining in superb condition.

Watch is fronted by a double-sunk enamel Montgomery numeral dial with script "Hamilton" signature, and watch is housed in a gold-filled open face case with attractive engine turning and engraving detail to its rear. Movement serial number is 682562 which is interestingly from a run of Grade 924 production. Partial disassembly to inspect interior numbers shows that the barrel bridge has a matching 682562 marking but also a non-matching number which has been overstamped, and that there are no serial number markings to the underside of the balance cock, the balance wheel, or underneath the dial. This odd numbering and lack of numbering suggests this movement was specially finished and upgraded by Hamilton for some purpose outside the normal run of production. Started running when wound but balance motion is very sluggish and I think likely movement hasn't seen a servicing in many years. Beautiful movement cosmetically with excellent 2-tone color and luster. Dial is beautiful with just a very faint hairline in its seconds-register and with some edge flaking under the case bezel between the 7 O'clock and 8 O'clock area.
